Central Motor Company

Central Motor Company was founded in 1918 by Joe Nix Mitchell, Sr.  Various family members continued in the business including his sons Joe Nix Mitchell, Jr. who served as President of the company and Francis Douglas “Bud” Mitchell who served as Secretary and Treasurer.

The company was a retail and wholesale Dodge and Plymouth dealer serving McLennan and ten surrounding counties.  It was at one time the oldest operating automobile dealership in Waco and one of the oldest in Texas.

Joe Nix Mitchell, Sr. was the son of Thomas D. Mitchell and Sally Nix.  He grew up in Gainesville, Texas and began his career working for one year at First National Bank in Durant, Indian Territory in 1899.  He worked from about 1901 to 1906 in the wholesale shoe business in Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory before relocating to Central Texas where he represented the Hamilton-Brown Shoe Company.  He continued with this business until he entered the automobile business by forming Central Motor Company.  He married Alma Nash in June 1908.
