Horace Aurelius Smith Residence, Waco, Texas

We know of no photos of the house other than the two below.

These are Louise Smith’s recollections of the house and who has lived there over the years:

1615 Morrow was built by Horace Aurellius and Alice Hewey Smith and was their personal residence for many years.  Alice Louise inherited it from them, but it remained unoccupied for a few years.  When Rufus left the Navy after WW2, he married Virginia in Arizona and brought his bride to Waco. Having no other place to live they moved into 1615, which by that time needed some modern amenities. I know that they installed a washer and dryer into the hallway between the dining room and kitchen where dishes, household items were also kept. I am also almost sure that they upgraded the kitchen. The basement used to flood – I know Mother put in a pump, but they may have put in one before. When we first came to Waco (I was in the 4th grade), we moved in with Grandmother Nash, because Rufus and Virginia were still residing in 1615.  When we finally completed the move to Waco (I was in the 6th grade) Rufus and Virginia were beginning to build their new house in a new section of Waco. As best as I can recall we moved into 1615 when I was in junior high. Mother (Alice Louise) remained in the house until she married Dudley in 1966 and moved to Alabama. Dudley died in Aug. ’67 and Mother moved to Oklahoma to be around Bob and Sue. Mother died in November ’67. Glenn and I married in the spring of ’68 and I went back to Waco and collected my things and the furniture that we now have in our house and garage.  Bob was the executor of Mother’s will and estate and was supposed to sell the house. No one was interested so he tried to rent it – a woman supposedly “rented” it for her two elderly parents to live in. They were the ones who collected and stacked old newspapers and other items.  Bob swears that he never collected or saw one cent of rent from the elderly parents OR the woman who rented it for them. It was after this that the house burned to the ground.
